Newborn Calf Serum (NBCS) is is obtained from 3- to 10-day-old calves and can be used as a high-grade replacement (alternative) for Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS). 

In comparison, Calf Serum (Bovine Calf Serum, BCS) is obtained from animals that are not more than 12 months old. Newborn Calf Serum and Calf Serum contain more immunoglobulins than Fetal Bovine Serum and have an increased protein content. They are a cost-effective alternative to Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS).

新生牛血清（或国产胎牛血清）是从中国境内采集出生后4小时内未进食的新生牛血清。每批次的新生牛血清均进行了检验，以考察其对于多种细胞三次传代后生长的支持能力。在每一代，细胞被传代培养至最初的细胞接种密度。将结果与对照生长培养基 (含有此前经过鉴定的参考血清) 获得的平行试验结果进行比较。

血清通常用作细胞生长的添加物，拥有多种功能和用途，如：富含大分子蛋白，低分子量的营养素，作为氨基酸、碳水化合物、维生素的额外来源；提高介质的缓冲能力；可结合或中和有毒成分；减少细胞氧化应激，减少细胞凋亡；提供促进生长的因子，有助细胞适应培养环境。
